The Army v Navy rugby match this weekend is widely considered to be the most high-security event at Twickenham stadium.
RTT reporter Rachel Bishop spoke with counter-terrorism desk manager, police sergeant Tom Knox, to find out how the police have been preparing and what people should look out for.
At least one serious terrorist attack, which could match 7/7 or 9/11, is thwarted by police every month.
Such “close-calls” may be considered frightening, but when matched with the facts of how many calls are received and how simple methods can prevent these attacks, it is clear how important awareness can be.
Sgt Knox, from Twickenham police, wants people to be aware of what to look out for, but stresses that Twickenham stadium and Richmond borough as a whole are not at great risk of a terrorist attack.
He said: “It’s not to be paranoid, it’s to ensure we are doing everything possible to make sure it secure.”
There are three strands within the counter-terrorism unit – prepare, protect and prevent, and Sgt Knox works within the prepare sector raising awareness in-house to security threats.
Following the Boston marathon bombs on April 15, the UK’s police forces have been told to keep alert, but the threat level of attack has remained the same.
Sgt Knox sent an email on April 16 saying: “The present threat level to the UK from international terrorism remains at substantial, which means an attack is a strong possibility.
“Although at this time the threat level has not changed, in light of recent events in Boston and the high-profile nature of the funeral of Baroness Thatcher, Sunday’s London Marathon and the RFU Army v Navy rugby fixture, please remind all your staff to remain vigilant and to report anything they believe to be suspicious to the police or security staff.
